We used
this "droplift" technique in order to protest the
current state of copyright law in this country.

Why? Because our art is composed largely of
uncleared samples. Each artist on this CD
is involved in a relationship with media
appropriation, found sound, and the art of collage.

For the last hundred years, artists have recognized
the wide possibilities afforded by taking elements
of the world around you -- newspaper clippings,
photos, magazines, and even manufactured objects
-- and recombining them to form works that are
exciting, new, and often comment on who we are
and what the times we live in are like. The
artists on this CD do the same thing with
sound.

We cut the TV, radio, tapes, recordings we've
made, music we've creatively altered and purloined,
samples we've found and hidden again, and even
eachother, to weave our own sonic tapestries
that describe our lives and our times.

Unfortunately, the prejudices of others and the
big business of music make what we do rather
difficult to get out there. Rather limp and
bullheaded interpretations of copyright law
and irrational fears cause the music
industry -- and its world of lawyers --
to ignore and threaten us.

All of which gets in the way of our work,
and your enjoyment.

The artists on this disc want you to hear
what we've made. We don't think there's
anything illegal about it, so we did what
we could to get it into your hands. Open
your ears and let us inside for a moment,
you'll see.

The Droplift Project is an art-response to
the current relation of artists and lawmakers
to the techniques of appropriation, collage,
and sampling in music. It has been designed
to play on your Compact Disc Audio Equipment
without modification. Your ears, attention-span,
and brain may require slight adjustments for
maximum enjoyment of this Quality Product.
lifted from http://www.droplift.org/linernotes.txt

Also, some examples

http://blog.myspace.com/nationalcynical

Local Examples of Media and Performance

So far we have only talked about widely known examples of the incorporations of media in performance. Last year, I saw a show at the Fringe Festival that utilized video, (live and recorded) and sound effects from a computer. I thought it was interesting that instead of hiding the production booth as most theaters do, they put it in direct view of the audience. I think that this is a sign that the merge between performance and media is welcomed. I also found that watching the performers set up and rearrange their media devices, mostly a small camera that could clip to anywhere on the main characters body, was as interesting as when it was in place. They created an environment that seemed very organic while being almost entirely artificial. The image from the camera, which was placed on the main character, was projected on a screen behind all of the action on stage, giving the audience two simutaneous however very different views.

IM GRANT kiosk

Arriving at a Port-of-Entry, the traveler proceeds to an IM Grant inspection line. There, the person inserts a card issued to them at enrollment to an IM Grant kiosk, similar to an automated bank teller machine. Each inspection kiosk is unmanned. Responding to messages on the kiosk's touch-screen display, the traveler is prompted to enter their IM Grant number and to place their hand in a hand geometry reader. Screen prompts are used to achieve correct alignment of the hand with the hand reader. The kiosk software automatically compares the live scan of the traveler's hand geometry biometric to the image captured at enrollment. Once the image is verified the IM Grant cardholder will be given suggestions about where to party, eat and drink, and make friends in their new place. For example if an immigrant were to first arrive at Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station they would proceed to the closest kiosk and then they would be given addresses and information about other immigrants in the city similar to them. This would allow for an exploration of the city through hand prints.

it's been a long time...

i'm interested in looking at less "artistic" and more practical manifestations of media in performance. not really a complaint, but with more time i would have liked to extend/divert the discussion towards more conventional examples. what does that mean though? who knows.

Weis Explained

more on rokeby

the Venice Biennale in 1986
Ars Electronica (Linz Austria) in 1991
the Mediale (Hamburg Germany) in 1993
the Kwangju Biennale (Korea) in 1995
the Biennale di Firenze (Florence, Italy) in 1996
Alien Intelligence (Kiasma, Helsinki) in 2000
The National Gallery of Canada in 2002
The Venice Architecture Biennale in 2002
Ars Electronica in 2002

native of toronto canada
born in ontario, 1960

went tol an art school
linking theme behind all artwork: how technology can be used to reflect on human issues
decorated with awards for his work, including twice winning prix ars electronica award of distinction

other projects relate to differences between human and artificial intelligence.

his very nervous system is permanently set up in belgium

the Muppet Model

The video above is footage of the Muppets edited to a song by the hardcore band Lightning Bolt. What would Birringer think when appropriators completely bypass the layer of production, the creation of their own images, and just chop up the original text? On YouTube, anyone can see the extreme of Birringer's Madonna Model, the idea of the audience as the producer. It's easier than ever to take and create media with the advent of broadband and cheap non-linear editing programs. In 2006, Joseph Kahn doesn't even need a camera with a fancy filter or his classmates for talent. He just needs iMovie.
SoPhocusChild (9:36:25 PM): yeooo
SoPhocusChild (9:36:37 PM): i was looking for ur profile on facebook
AnKneeF (9:36:50 PM): how's it going? oh I'm not on facebook...myspace
SoPhocusChild (9:38:09 PM): its going terrible right now
SoPhocusChild (9:38:15 PM): aim is the devil
SoPhocusChild (9:38:39 PM): im reading that article
SoPhocusChild (9:38:46 PM): over again
SoPhocusChild (9:39:18 PM): trying to make some connections between what drury emailed and some of those artists
SoPhocusChild (9:39:34 PM): have u caught up with anybody else in the group
AnKneeF (9:41:05 PM): nope...I havn't checked the blog though
SoPhocusChild (9:41:16 PM): i checked it earlier
SoPhocusChild (9:41:21 PM): so u like the bill viola stuff
AnKneeF (9:41:39 PM): remind me...
AnKneeF (9:42:22 PM): I am worried that this is going to be very disconnected
AnKneeF (9:42:44 PM): I don't remember much of that reading...
SoPhocusChild (9:42:54 PM): did u post that u were wondering if we could talk about viola in the presentation
SoPhocusChild (9:43:41 PM): didnt
SoPhocusChild (9:43:43 PM): sorry
AnKneeF (9:43:46 PM): no I didn't
SoPhocusChild (9:43:52 PM): look we can collaborate right now
SoPhocusChild (9:43:57 PM): sorry that must have been matt
SoPhocusChild (9:44:02 PM): or fred
SoPhocusChild (9:44:08 PM): do u have a dv camera
AnKneeF (9:44:17 PM): yeah
SoPhocusChild (9:44:20 PM): i have a small little camera
SoPhocusChild (9:44:33 PM): well i think we could make an interactive presentation right now
SoPhocusChild (9:44:44 PM): with short snippets of video posted to the blog
SoPhocusChild (9:44:48 PM): do think thats stupid
SoPhocusChild (9:44:52 PM): or too much
SoPhocusChild (9:44:57 PM): im just brainstorming
SoPhocusChild (9:45:13 PM): or do u think we should focus on getting down some hard facts from the texts
SoPhocusChild (9:45:25 PM): i figure u and i can come up with 10 mins
SoPhocusChild (9:45:33 PM): do u have other work to do tonight?
AnKneeF (9:46:26 PM): oh...wait, sorry I am scattered right now...
AnKneeF (9:46:30 PM): I did talk to fred
SoPhocusChild (9:46:46 PM): lol
AnKneeF (9:46:49 PM): he wants to do an installation of sorts
AnKneeF (9:47:01 PM): I was working with him most of today
AnKneeF (9:47:19 PM): do you have any free time tomorrow
SoPhocusChild (9:47:21 PM): on the project
SoPhocusChild (9:47:37 PM): if i do it would be insanely early
AnKneeF (9:47:37 PM): yeah...
AnKneeF (9:47:44 PM): ohh
AnKneeF (9:47:54 PM): ok well then I will try to explain the idea now
SoPhocusChild (9:48:00 PM): like 7am-930am
SoPhocusChild (9:48:09 PM): so u came up with something already
AnKneeF (9:48:17 PM): yeah...
AnKneeF (9:48:35 PM): you know how you can record a computer screen?
SoPhocusChild (9:48:42 PM): yeah
SoPhocusChild (9:49:56 PM): so u took a picture of it taking a picture of it
AnKneeF (9:50:34 PM): fred was thinking that we could have a recording of one person from our group in a mock "control room" who is queing up video by recording the control room previously, he was supposed to send me a script tonight so I could film it and then we would have the person seemingly manipulate the computer with in the computer
SoPhocusChild (9:51:18 PM): so it would be a fake live installation
AnKneeF (9:51:23 PM): playing the video clips that way...yeah
AnKneeF (9:51:49 PM): but we would only do like a 5 minute thing...because it is so involved
AnKneeF (9:52:24 PM): but he didn't send me the script yet and I haven't done the readings from the book and I have a paper to write...
SoPhocusChild (9:52:45 PM): well why dont u write ur paper
AnKneeF (9:52:53 PM): soo...maybe if we could do it all tomorrow...
AnKneeF (9:53:02 PM): yeah. it won't take long
SoPhocusChild (9:53:06 PM): im going to try to break this down and Ill send u everything that i write
AnKneeF (9:53:11 PM): but what is your idea?
AnKneeF (9:53:29 PM): break what down?
SoPhocusChild (9:53:40 PM): i dont know yet, i think she just really wants us to link up the websites from the resource page
SoPhocusChild (9:53:48 PM): to our blog
AnKneeF (9:53:51 PM): to the blog?
AnKneeF (9:53:53 PM): ok
SoPhocusChild (9:54:03 PM): and discuss each aspect of the artists in relation to that email
SoPhocusChild (9:54:10 PM): i was going to start there
SoPhocusChild (9:54:17 PM): and supplement with a video blog maybe
AnKneeF (9:54:25 PM): yeah..so I gues we should at least do that
AnKneeF (9:54:51 PM): do personal video blogs?
SoPhocusChild (9:55:09 PM): well just about this project
SoPhocusChild (9:55:19 PM): like if u just want to say that u dont know what ur doing
AnKneeF (9:55:29 PM): yeah but we each do one?
SoPhocusChild (9:55:31 PM): and write ur feelings about an artist
SoPhocusChild (9:55:33 PM): yeah
SoPhocusChild (9:55:38 PM): or a few little ones
SoPhocusChild (9:55:42 PM): or a long one
SoPhocusChild (9:55:49 PM): my camera does like 3 min recordings
AnKneeF (9:56:37 PM): are you going to make it to the meeting tomorrow?
SoPhocusChild (9:57:44 PM): yeah
SoPhocusChild (9:57:56 PM): at like 1pm right
SoPhocusChild (9:58:02 PM): actually what am i saying
SoPhocusChild (9:58:09 PM): im free after 12pm
SoPhocusChild (10:00:22 PM): so what is matt doing?
SoPhocusChild (10:01:31 PM): check this site out
SoPhocusChild (10:02:01 PM): http://www.turbulence.org/Works/1year/info.php?page=bg
SoPhocusChild (10:04:15 PM): this an example of live transmission
SoPhocusChild (10:04:20 PM): is
SoPhocusChild (10:23:19 PM): still there
AnKneeF (10:23:45 PM): yep
SoPhocusChild (10:23:58 PM): are u working on ur paper
AnKneeF (10:25:38 PM): yeah
AnKneeF (10:25:41 PM): almost done
SoPhocusChild (10:25:58 PM): what class is it for
AnKneeF (10:26:18 PM): creative writing poetry
SoPhocusChild (10:26:39 PM): oh i took that class but i had to drop it
SoPhocusChild (10:26:44 PM): fun class
AnKneeF (10:27:22 PM): yeah, it is almost relaxing
SoPhocusChild (10:27:44 PM): just give me a shout when ur done
SoPhocusChild (10:47:38 PM): we could just copy a music video
SoPhocusChild (10:48:09 PM): what would explain model of appropriation
SoPhocusChild (10:48:26 PM): that all images are available to consumers
SoPhocusChild (10:48:35 PM): like if we wanted to simulate mtv cribs
SoPhocusChild (10:48:43 PM): we can do that with a video camera
AnKneeF (10:48:51 PM): tomorrow?
SoPhocusChild (10:49:05 PM): im explaing the text
SoPhocusChild (10:49:16 PM): we could do something like that
SoPhocusChild (10:49:24 PM): that would explain one part of the text
SoPhocusChild (10:49:39 PM): that would be #3 on the list
AnKneeF (10:49:56 PM): so you want to create something on our own instead of using clips?
SoPhocusChild (10:50:09 PM): im just blabbing
AnKneeF (10:50:16 PM): haha
AnKneeF (10:50:26 PM): how'd your paper />SoPhocusChild (10:51:01 PM): it was good
AnKneeF (10:51:03 PM): we don't have a paper due for this do we?
SoPhocusChild (10:51:29 PM): i dont think so
AnKneeF (10:51:38 PM): ok..good you scared me
SoPhocusChild (10:51:53 PM): she just said to blog everything we discuss for this assignment
SoPhocusChild (10:52:01 PM): did my video come up on the blog
AnKneeF (10:52:25 PM): have you heard of tape beatles or negativland?
AnKneeF (10:52:27 PM): yeah
SoPhocusChild (10:52:36 PM): nah
SoPhocusChild (10:52:41 PM): enlighten me
AnKneeF (10:52:56 PM): they are appropriators and I think they have songs on the web
SoPhocusChild (10:53:13 PM): send me a link please
AnKneeF (10:53:25 PM): k
AnKneeF (10:54:32 PM): http://www.ubu.com/sound/pw/tape_beatles.html
AnKneeF (10:55:06 PM): http://negativland.com/
AnKneeF (11:01:06 PM): I think I will do the builders association
SoPhocusChild (11:01:18 PM): im listening to a sick mix on that beatles thing
AnKneeF (11:01:32 PM): yeah they are pretty crazy
SoPhocusChild (11:01:55 PM): u should put that on the link list
AnKneeF (11:01:56 PM): leanne erickson just introduced my class to them on tuesday
SoPhocusChild (11:02:07 PM): oh so u met them
AnKneeF (11:02:33 PM): is there a special link section on the blog...oh no she brought them to my attention
SoPhocusChild (11:02:54 PM): yeah u have to go to the edit link under the links section
AnKneeF (11:03:01 PM): ok
SoPhocusChild (11:03:06 PM): and u have to cut and paste the link in the template
SoPhocusChild (11:03:10 PM): i believe
SoPhocusChild (11:03:20 PM): if u hit the help button it shows u how to do it
AnKneeF (11:03:46 PM): ok
AnKneeF (11:05:19 PM): do I add a post first?
SoPhocusChild (11:05:36 PM): hold on let me pull the blog up
SoPhocusChild (11:08:44 PM): she didnt allow us to have full yet
AnKneeF (11:13:39 PM): oh geez is it enjoyable?
SoPhocusChild (11:13:47 PM): def
SoPhocusChild (11:14:04 PM): it moves quite a bit through the last 10 years
AnKneeF (11:15:04 PM): that would be a good example of pop culture and high art mixing
SoPhocusChild (11:15:29 PM): i think u were right about it being an approriator of sound
AnKneeF (11:16:03 PM): yeah definetly
SoPhocusChild (11:16:53 PM): look on page 151
SoPhocusChild (11:17:04 PM): theres a few things u might be able to quote<br buddies
AnKneeF (11:41:32 PM): ok...so you guys chose your artists and got all your info?
SoPhocusChild (11:41:59 PM): not really
SoPhocusChild (11:42:11 PM): but im doing the david dude right
possiblymutual (11:42:23 PM): thought i was doing david
SoPhocusChild (11:42:27 PM): fred has his away message up
SoPhocusChild (11:42:31 up
possiblymutual (11:44:33 PM): look at veryn nervous system
AnKneeF (11:46:29 PM): do either of you have the link to the class site?
possiblymutual (11:46:41 PM): hang on
SoPhocusChild (11:47:40 PM): this is crazy
SoPhocusChild (11:47:54 PM): what is the interface made out of
possiblymutual (11:48:10 PM): the site seems to be down at the moment
possiblymutual (11:48:52 PM): looks like a camera, something thast processess the pixel changes in the image, a comp, a synth and speakers.
SoPhocusChild (11:49:25 PM): which site
SoPhocusChild (11:49:33 PM): im on rokeby now
SoPhocusChild (11:50:03 PM): well i think he's a good example of sculpting space
possiblymutual (11:50:11 PM): the part with our project resorces
possiblymutual (11:50:13 PM): yeah
possiblymutual (11:53:18 PM): so we each have an artist then
possiblymutual (11:53:39 PM): how do we divide up the rest of it
SoPhocusChild (11:54:14 PM): what do u mean
SoPhocusChild (11:54:20 PM): u mean as far as the article
possiblymutual (11:54:33 PM): no
possiblymutual (11:54:43 PM): the thing on the site
possiblymutual (11:54:51 PM): maybe i dont know what i mean
SoPhocusChild (11:55:21 PM): u just pick an artist and do a 5 minute presentation
possiblymutual (11:55:28 PM): ok
AnKneeF (11:55:56 PM): yeah that was my understanding of it...sorry I lost the window for a minute
SoPhocusChild (11:56:02 PM): but have to mention how they relate to real time video, live transmission, and dissolution of boundaries between pop culture and high art
possiblymutual (11:56:15 PM): this is hard
SoPhocusChild (11:56:20 PM): yeah
SoPhocusChild (11:56:23 PM): really fuckin hard
AnKneeF (11:56:24 PM): well said
possiblymutual (11:56:30 PM): yeah
SoPhocusChild (11:56:39 PM): and it doesnt help this guy just rolling wooden balls around in a room
AnKneeF (11:56:48 PM): eh?
SoPhocusChild (11:56:49 PM): whats new media about that
AnKneeF (11:56:52 PM): david?
SoPhocusChild (11:56:56 PM): the Birringer
SoPhocusChild (11:57:00 PM): last link
AnKneeF (11:57:09 PM): oh I haven't checked that out
possiblymutual (11:57:11 PM): our advantage is that i dont think she (prof) even knows what she wants us to do really
SoPhocusChild (11:57:16 PM): hes like a dancer
AnKneeF (11:57:19 PM): did you guys read the text?
SoPhocusChild (11:57:25 PM): i read it once
possiblymutual (11:57:31 PM): i should
SoPhocusChild (11:57:32 PM): it sucks as well
SoPhocusChild (11:57:36 PM): and its long
SoPhocusChild (11:57:39 PM): im taking notes
AnKneeF (11:57:51 PM): so its dense
SoPhocusChild (11:57:53 PM): i told annie i will gladly post what ive compiled tonight
SoPhocusChild (11:57:56 PM): yeah
SoPhocusChild (11:58:05 PM): and the wording is so academic
SoPhocusChild (11:58:15 PM): like basically the beginning is all about remixing
AnKneeF (11:58:16 PM): bleh
possiblymutual (11:58:20 PM): were all meeting in her office tomo at 1 right
AnKneeF (11:58:26 PM): yeah
SoPhocusChild (11:58:36 PM): yes
SoPhocusChild (11:58:55 PM): how is it going annie
AnKneeF (11:59:07 PM): I get out of class at 11:30 and will prolly be in the tech center till 1 if you all want to touch base before hand
SoPhocusChild (11:59:32 PM): i help with an esl class till 12
SoPhocusChild (11:59:43 PM): so ill try to get over there asap
SoPhocusChild (11:59:53 PM): im going to stay up for awhile playing around with the links
SoPhocusChild (11:59:57 PM): ill post some stuff
AnKneeF (12:00:00 AM): Eh...I am just looking at builders accociation stuff now...
SoPhocusChild (12:00:01 AM): so look for it tomorrow
AnKneeF (12:00:05 AM): ok
SoPhocusChild (12:00:17 AM): i just want you guys to know that i dont really what im dong
SoPhocusChild (12:00:18 AM): doing
SoPhocusChild (12:00:24 AM): so expect something weird tomorrow
possiblymutual (12:00:34 AM): this is gonna be wierd
SoPhocusChild (12:00:40 AM): have u guys taken a new media class before
possiblymutual (12:01:06 AM): n
possiblymutual (12:01:06 AM): o
AnKneeF (12:01:11 AM): yeah? weird can be fun...no this is my first, seems very confused though
possiblymutual (12:01:31 AM): yeah
SoPhocusChild (12:01:38 AM): well im taking a special topics
possiblymutual (12:01:49 AM): class last week was the least interested ive been
SoPhocusChild (12:01:49 AM): and it makes more sense
SoPhocusChild (12:02:02 AM): the problem is that this is a survey
SoPhocusChild (12:02:18 AM): so drury prolly has too much to cover
possiblymutual (12:02:22 AM): yeah
possiblymutual (12:02:26 AM): thats evident
SoPhocusChild (12:02:41 AM): and they'll make changes as the concentration expands
possiblymutual (12:02:53 AM): yeah
SoPhocusChild (12:03:01 AM): i think this is the second year they offered new media
SoPhocusChild (12:03:31 AM): can i ask why you guys wanted to take this course
possiblymutual (12:04:08 AM): thought nwe might get to make shit
SoPhocusChild (12:04:33 AM): u do in the 300 level
possiblymutual (12:04:33 AM): i had this idea in my head of making a jacket with speakers
SoPhocusChild (12:04:39 AM): they let u do whatever u want
possiblymutual (12:04:39 AM): so ive heard
SoPhocusChild (12:04:44 AM): fred is on
possiblymutual (12:04:48 AM): cool
AnKneeF (12:04:53 AM): yeah same...and it seems like ew media is the only real way to study experimental media at temple
possiblymutual (12:04:55 AM): whats his sn
possiblymutual (12:04:59 AM): ill ad him
possiblymutual (12:05:02 AM): add
SoPhocusChild (12:05:41 AM): phredolog1st
SoPhocusChild (12:05:49 AM): thats his sn
phredolog1st has entered the chat room.
possiblymutual (12:06:59 AM): hes in
phredolog1st (12:07:03 AM): yao.
possiblymutual (12:07:08 AM): hey
phredolog1st (12:07:10 AM): hay guys!
SoPhocusChild (12:07:13 AM): ok
phredolog1st (12:07:27 AM): annie, didja tell them?
AnKneeF (12:07:41 AM): yeah...kinda
possiblymutual (12:07:57 AM): kinda what
SoPhocusChild (12:08:01 AM): lol
AnKneeF (12:08:13 AM): But I couldnt get the program to work...
AnKneeF (12:08:33 AM): I don't know if I can explain it well...
phredolog1st (12:08:42 AM): i had an idea about a multimedia component to the presentation. it involved filming someone in a control room and scripting it so that we were interacting with her on-screen.
SoPhocusChild (12:09:02 AM): that would be cool
SoPhocusChild (12:09:11 AM): do u think we have the time to do it
SoPhocusChild (12:09:22 AM): ill be free tomorrow after 12pm
possiblymutual (12:09:27 AM): same
phredolog1st (12:09:31 AM): we were going to use this video screen capture program to make it look like she was controlling the computer from a remote location as well as interacting with us.
possiblymutual (12:09:45 AM): gotcha
phredolog1st (12:09:58 AM): i think it's do-able, yeah.
possiblymutual (12:10:07 AM): ok
phredolog1st (12:10:08 AM): it was supposed to be a short little segement.
phredolog1st (12:10:25 AM): does anyone have a good PC laptop?
SoPhocusChild (12:10:27 AM): so is actually going to be live
AnKneeF (12:10:29 AM): only problem is the ballet solist in Kentucky, then pioneered in the use of video in dance performance during the 1980's in New York, where she primarily worked as a video artist in collaboration with choreographers. Cathy Weis formed her own company in 1993 and began to create full scale works. Her pieces have been commissioned by The Kitchen, Dance Theater Workshop, Dixon Place and Performance Space 122 in New York, as well as the Center for New Dance Program in Arnheim and the Museum of Modern Art in Prague. In 1996 she received the prestigious New York Dance and Performance ("BESSIE") Award for Choreography and Creation.

Dancing with herself Weis

Electric Haiku

Videostar

media and performance

just for fun, i suppose.

Everything's Coming Up Gorillaz

The ultimate multimedia performance artists. He does the experiments with video and sound. Its probably something we all have to read about tonight, but he has this one amazing experiment called the "Very Nervous System" where he combines a video camera, an image processor, a computer, a a sythesizer and some sort of audio output to make body movements register as sound. I've always l;iked this idea, and it makes me happy to see that someone is smart enough to figure it out.

try this link,

http://homepage.mac.com/davidrokeby/home.html

i also find it interesting that this guy's official website is a .mac blog.

yo

bill viola

hey group. sorry im so late at getting to post.
A video -performance artist I see come up a lot that I have some interest in is Bill Viola
He's not on the list on our link on the website, i was wondering if you guys knew whether or not we should mention him.
Also, its a bit late to mention this, but im not free today until about 7. so if anyone wants to try fred's thing then, i guess post.

OKay, so look..okay...

So I have an Idea regarding the presentation. It comes from watching Troika Ranch (which is my artist, I guess) and how they literally sculpt space using video. But before I get into specifics, I'd need to know who's available tomorrow during the day. We need a camera with an audio input and a camera person and talent. If we have these components, then I have something good for us to frame our presentation, specifically the idea of Live Transmission.

Presentation style

So now that the content of our presentation has been laid out, how is our execution? The concept of "Real Time"
Early video art explored the concept of delivering "real time" video. In other words, the time it took for an event to happen and the time it took for the video of the even to be watched was the same. this is in sharp distinction to film, which historically had to be shot in short segments that represented longer periods of time when edited. Real Time is an esthetic concept that is unique to video in this respect.

2). add to this the concept of "Live Transmission", which harks directly back to television. Early video artists playing with Live Transmission were exploring ideas about the collapse of space, and the sculpting of space, with notions like the Feedback Loop, where a camera and a monitor 'looking' at each other can cause an infinite mirroring; or where a camera and monitor placed strategically can play with your sense of perception, gravity, motion; or where a camera and monitor placed at a great distance can cause a sense of closeness, particulary when a telecommunications feed is involved, as in the Hole in Space project.

3). Finally, add the concept of dissolving the boundaries between pop culture and high art. Birringer talks about this in depth in his examination of media literacy and pop culture icons like Madonna. It’s the whole notion of the circulation of iconic images of celebrities, and how celebrities like Madonna are a construction of many layers of such icons. The essay then talks about how kids appropriate, or take, those same icons, and play with them in the same way through making their own media—thereby making the mass-produced, commercialized cultural icon into something more intimate and personal. Both breaking through the hard, shiny, empty surface of mass culture, and both becoming it and making it different, individual.

I would like each of you to do some thinking about these 3 concepts, maybe go back over the reading a bit, and read the two selections that the whole class is reading for Thursday. Then each of you choose one of the artists that I have posted on the MEDIA & PERFORMANCE RESOURCE PAGE and analyze them using these three concepts. Over the next few days, blog it. Email me with questions. Each of you will do a five minute presentation on your given artist. In class on Thursday

Is it possible for all of you to meet at 1pm before class on Thursday to go over your presentations?

SDrury

I'm confused like whoa

I'm in the process of rereading the handout as well as checking out some of the links on the resource page. I'm starting to think that there needs to be a push for a more simple and straightforward approach to breaking down some of these concepts in new media. A lot of these artists write statements that are for engineers and computer science specialists. I found a quote from a new media practice guide from AHDS (I'm not quite sure what that means) but maybe someone will find it helpful.

"Be crazy. Take chances. Explore the unknown. Break new ground. These are weird, exciting, challenging times. We have bold new tools. We have new media and we have new messages. But look and listen, read the ground. Maybe starting with a little mix of popular soundbytes and work into how new technology has democratized media, and allowed for 'remixes', more personal critique, and global interaction (mention little brother) but I am stuck on the challenge part of the question. (How do media technologies change, expand, challenge performance arts, historically and currently?) What are your thoughts? Also the historically part I feel like I have no clue on.
Also I looked over the links on the class website. Jodi.org...ummm. I've seen a couple websites along the same lines, with taking snipets of the internet and jumbling them but am not sure of the purpose. My best guess would be that it is a comment on the programmable database of vast amounts of information that we have access to.
Again, any thoughts?
Until next time.

Media and Performance Group:

I have updated the link on the class website: http://isc.temple.edu/sdrury/survey2006/Media+Performance.html

You can go to this link for more information on your subject.
SDrury
